To give the harbour a fighting chance to recover and come back to a more natural state and to protect biodiversity.

Currently status of the reserve is that it was declined by the Minister of Conservation, Hon. Kate Wilkinson as she considered it would "adversely affect recreational fishing".

Judicial Review: Opportunity/Challenge for Positive Decision.
The applicants, the Akaroa Harbour Marine Protection Society Incorporated have called for a Judicial Review in the High Court. If successful, this will require Kate Wilkinson to re-examine her decision by taking into account information as directed by the Judge. This decision has set a bad precedent for other marine reserve applications elsewhere in NZ. How you can help: Email the Minister
k.wilkinson@ministers.govt.nz and explain your view.
